Within their respective ecosystems, gaming platforms are taking sides on nonfungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain, cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. Epic Games Store showed a welcoming attitude for the use of crypto in video games and for blockchain developers after media reported that Valve had banned crypto and NFT-related games on Steam, CoinTelegraph wrote.
According to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, the Epic Games Store would allow games using blockchain technology unless developers failed to disclose their terms or broke the applicable laws. An appropriate group must age-rate the games, he pointed out, adding:
Though Epic’s not using crypto in our games, we welcome innovation in the areas of technology and finance.
In an interview with The Verge, Sweeney said Epic was willing to work with early developers in this area when it came to the use of NFTs in video games. Some limitations do exist for Epic as a platform provider at this point. Previously, Sweeney has made it clear that as a game developer, Epic is not planning to use NFTs in its own products.
Developers must use another payment system
Sweeney pointed out that Epic’s payment services would not support cryptocurrency transactions, leaving developers the option to use another payment system. There are no near-term plans on the part of Epic Games Store to integrate blockchain into its client.
Epic Games Store is a platform to buy and download video games, which was developed by Epic Games, a leading video game publisher. The platform, which was set up in 2018, makes it possible for users to purchase the digital version of a video game through desktop. Then, they can save it in a library and download it whenever they want.
Sweeney’s comments come in the wake of Steam’s blockchain game ban. The digital video game store’s guideline states that the platform doesn’t allow video games that allow or issue exchange of NFTs or crypto and that use blockchain technology. According to game developer SpacePirate:
Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that can have real world value on their platform.
