Today, Flare Network has come a little closer to attaining its goal to enable Turing-complete smart contacts for any native blockchain without smart contract functionality. Songbird, their Canary Network, successfully completed the initial observation stage of 10 days. Songbird, which was launched on September 16, will pass through a total of three preset stages in the testing process, culminating in the launch of the Flare Network.

Observation stage instrumental in testing and deployment of underlying network

The observation stage was key in deploying and testing both the Flare Time Series Oracle (FTSO) and the network. The three protocols will enable trustless use of about two-thirds of the value in the crypto industry on Flare with highly scalable smart contracts based on Ethereum (ETH/USD) Virtual Machine.

Next two protocols allow scalable token use on Flare

The State-connector and the F-asset contracts will be tested before the Flare Network launches. The two protocols will provide tokens without native smart contracts (and some with) to access and be used on Flare directly in DeFi, NFTs, gaming, and other decentralized applications.

Over 340 validators and 40 data providers applied for whitelisting

No unexpected issues arose during the observation stage. More than 340 validators and over 40 data providers applied for whitelisting, similar to the launch of Kusama (KSM/USD). Songbird aims to become a place to test Flare updates.

Hugo Philion, CoFounder of Flare Networks, said:

Songbird marks a key step for the entire industry in enabling tokens on networks without smart contracts to be used trustlessly and in a non-custodial manner for the first time with scalable smart contracts. Over the last week witnessing the Flare community start to interact with the Songbird and particularly the FTSO has been wonderful for myself and the team to observe. So far only one of the core protocols put forward by Flare is operating on Songbird. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind the community that a canary network is a mainnet designed for live testing and experimentation. It is possible that some level of disruption & potential risk of funds could occur.
